REVIEW : VIDEO GAME FABLES (PC)

“Video Game Fables” is a funny RPG adventure set in an abandoned RPG game world with no players in decades.

Someone calling herself “The Forsaken Princess” severely ruins the world’s script. It’s up to Aru (the world’s princess), Nate (an NPC yearning to be a hero), and Tator (the villain’s son) to restore order…or perhaps forever ruin everything.

REVIEW : VIDEO GAME FABLES (PC)
  • Throughout the language, people, and universe, there is lighthearted humour.
  • Fun tale and storyline that does not rely on parody and has its individuality.
  • Battles that are challenging, fast-paced, and turn-based, require strategy and quick thinking.
  • Graphics that are colourful and lively.
  • A unique XP and levelling system that allows you to deploy resources to strategically set up your party.
  • Skill crafting is a light class system that alters play styles slightly depending on the weapon equipped, as well as weapon upgrades, mining, fishing, simple gardening, and a variety of other entertaining elements.
  • One person created it.

Story & Gameplay

Someone calling herself “The Forsaken Princess” totally rewrites the game’s script. It’s up to Aru, Nate, and Tator to restore order…or change everything forever. But what if we also pressed “pause” in real life?

Video Game Fables is a fun RPG with a delightful and amusing environment and storyline. I frequently long for the carefree days when you just got home from school and played Paper Mario 2. The game aspires to be just that: a modest but straightforward video game with a lighthearted tale that does not take itself seriously. It drew me in by being visually distinct and pleasant throughout the entire playthrough, as well as being multi-dimensional. Have you ever envisioned a story in which the “hero” does not save the day?

If you like Paper Mario, you’ll feel right at home; the gameplay is nearly the same, with a distinct plot, charm, and no badges.

You have these turn-based encounters where you can choose whether to utilise basic attacks or skills to heal yourself, stat buff your party members, or do magic attacks. Exploring the globe map is entertaining, but my one complaint is that it could use an increase in walk speed (or perhaps a run button) because it takes forever to get to a certain spot. Aside from that, gathering materials to create weapons or fishing in the water is a fun diversion to do while exploring the globe.

Equipment & Abilities

You have eight distinct weapons from which each individual can freely choose, and each of them has a particular purpose. Spear, for example, allows you to collect two “CRIT” for the next ability to be a critical hit rather than simply one. Dagger allows you to attack faster, thus instead of needing two turns, you only need one, and so on.

You can also use certain “skill mods” to unlock new powers and improve them even further. So, for example, your heal can take three turns instead of two but heals much more, or it can take only one turn but heals less effectively.

Because every choice is viable, you, as a player, can freely choose whatever weapon and skill best suit your play style.

review-video-game-fables-pcIf you're looking for an amusing, lighthearted RPG with fast, innovative, hard, turn-based combat set in a creative, colourful environment where you can explore to satisfy your paper Mario craving, I highly recommend Video Game Fables. This game embodies everything I look for in a video game. Congratulations to that one developer for generating such a great work of art.
