A miniseries of pamphlet adventures for the Liminal Horror tabletop role-playing game.

Story

His arrival was foretold...

Inspired by the collected works of Junji Ito, Tales from the Void is an anthology series for the Liminal Horror tabletop role-playing game. Each of these tri-fold pamphlet adventures gives a short glimpse into the paranatural and weird that hides in the corners of our game worlds.

What lies within
  •  “The Chair” by Zach Hazard Vaupen: Whose chair is this? What is it doing here? Do I dare sit in it? What is growing on it? Why does it pulse? Should a chair have a pulse? [Touchstones: Videodrome, The Enigma of Amigara Fault]
  •  “His Arrival Was Foretold” by Evlyn Moreau: A steady concern has been growing within a housing project, as more of its residents go missing. Does this have anything to do with the recent obsession the local children have with a graffiti representing a strange cat? [Touchstones: Candyman, an old meme.]
  •   “The Spirits in the Firs” by Matthew Morris: For centuries an eldritch ichor seeped from lava tubes under the Cascades. Legends of giant, hairy creatures have filled the regional folklore, but the Bureau calls it all a hoax. Well renown cryptozoologist Dr. David Carven doesn’t believe the shadow agency, but he’s disappeared while looking for the truth. As smoke billows from the peaks, you must piece together the clues and find the truth yourselves. ITS ALL CONNECTED! [Touchstones: Pacific Northwest Folklore, the X-Files, Stranger Things, and works by HP Lovecraft]

Where do the funds go?

The funds will be evenly divided among the three authors (Evlyn, Zach, & Matthew) to pay for the writing, art, and design for their respective pamphlets. Each contributor will retain full rights to their work. Your contribution will help make this anthology a reality and hopefully inspire more entries in the future.

What is Liminal Horror

Liminal Horror is a TTRPG system for telling modern horror stories.  The system is adaptable to multiple horror genres, with a focus on how characters change through play (and exposure to the weird and paranatural).

Adapted from Cairn (which is a descendent of Into the Odd & Knave), Liminal Horror uses a straightforward roll under system (with three stats) to allow for adaptable and versatile play at the table. A rules reference fits neatly onto one half letter page.

Core System & Official Modules

  •  Liminal Horror can be found in multiple formats: itch, free online, in print from Exalted Funeral (it can also be purchased as an add-on in this campaign)
  •  The Bureau (an office mega-dungeon that’s a love letter to Control and Gradient Descent)
  •  The Mall (a faction based sandbox dungeon that answers: What if The Thing were set in a 1990s mall?) (it can also be purchased as an add-on in this campaign)
Why digital only?

The major goal of this project is to create three fantastic pamphlet adventures from three phenomenal creators in such a way as to set the tone for what Liminal Horror pamphlets can be.

In order to make this goal a reality, we decided to keep this project simple. There are only two tiers, there will be no flashy stretch goals that bloat the production time, and the pamphlets will be digital only. This allows for the creators to focus on making the best adventures possible. Removing the barrier of physical distribution and logistics means we can provide equal access across the globe and devote the most possible time to each project.

We will be including print ready files for those who want to make their own for their collection (one of the major benefits of the pamphlet). And who knows, depending on the success of this project, these adventures may make an appearing in physical form at some point in the future. Stay tuned!

REWARD Tiers:

  • Investigator Tier ($9): This tier allows the backer to help fund the project, and receive all three digital pamphlets.
  • Patron of the Void ($20): This tier has the three digital pamphlets but also includes digital copies of the Liminal Horror core rules and The Mall (an official module that answers the question: “What if The Thing were set in a 1990s mall).

Risks and challenges

As with any project, there are some risks. This is the first Kickstarter project managed by Goblin Archives and Josh Domanski. It also involves three different creators putting out three different products. Despite this risk, we have built in some specific ways in which we can facilitate a successful project. – The digital only nature of this project is a means to put creative focus on the projects. All participants have successfully created and distributed multiple digital ttrpg projects (as well as crowdfunding on kickstarter and itch). -This also means distribution can happen seamlessly after projects complete (through itch.io) – The scope of the project is also an important factor. Having each creator focus on a single pamphlet each allows for a manageable/deliverable level of writing, design, and art.
