Caspian Interactive’s attempt to create their own Soul-like game is Usurper: Soulbound. They wanted to build their own game because they are huge fans of the Souls series and genre. It was a game that paid tribute to the series while also offering something unique.

With the debut of Usurper: Soulbound on Steam Early Access, the game aims to capture individuals and plunge them into this terrifying realm of existence. This is a Rogue-lite game designed for folks who are willing to put in the effort to understand the game. It is difficult and will put your resolve to the test.

What is Usurper: Soulbound

“This is the story of a King whose rule was so dreadful that his soul refused to leave the living world and clung to it by assuming the bodies of others utilizing the Usurper’s power. Heroes banded together to imprison him, and the land was once again in peace….until you, my dear Hero, wrecked that peace with your ignorance and greed.”

You can possess the bodies of foes and even other heroes in Usurper: Soulbound. All in an attempt to reclaim your physical form while imprisoned in a terrifying fortress.

The game is an Action RPG with rogue-lite elements thrown in for good measure. The combat is similar to Souls’, yet it has its flavour. Additionally, you can Usurp to make fighting stand out from its peers. This allows you to take control of adversaries and learn new skills. This can alter how you approach the game or interact with adversaries.

There are also some fantastic stages and environments in the game. Although much of the scenery is created, there is some random generation. In a game like this, having a random generation will force you to keep on your toes at all times.

But don’t worry, this game allows for jolly cooperation. You and a friend can take on the challenge together in a local co-op or online co-op with Steam Remote Play. Thanks to the battle system, it’s also a great challenge, which you’ll spend some time learning.

Look and Feel

The isometric camera perspective in Usurper: Soulbound works well for the game. With the strong outlines and the filter that imitates the linework of a comic panel, the visual style is clean and has a comic book feel to it. It looks great and adds a lot of personality to the game.

The lighting is fantastic. I like how the candles and torches provide just enough illumination while the other architectural aspects of the room contribute to the overall effect. It looks fantastic, from the marble floors and walls to the numerous usage of gold for various decorative elements. The use of colour to provide contrast and flavour is excellent since it brings out the less appealing aspects of the surroundings.

Final Verdict

Usurper: Soulbound is an intriguing souls-inspired rogue-lite ARPG that is already shaping into a good title with a bright future. Although the game is still in Early Access and is being developed by a small team, I believe there is only one way to go: up. I’m interested to see how this game develops in the future.
