REVIEW : Steelrising (PS5)

Some studios have the unfortunate circumstance of having talent but never having adequate funding. However, despite having a tight budget and being pressured by publishers, they are still able to complete their projects. Such chefs include the French from Spiders, who can create a variety of mouthwatering dishes using just two eggs, some bacon, and an onion. Three years ago, the heroic team began work on a game depicting a different France after publishing the popular but underfunded GreedFall.

Paris in 1789 is steaming outside the window. The mechanical army of automata constructed by the Count of Cagliostro for Louis XVI was the reason the French Revolution failed. Marie Antoinette, who is sequestered in a country home, dispatches her devoted terminator Aegis to Paris to ascertain the facts and stop the horrific tragedy. In addition to overcoming the king’s metal army, the mechanical heroine must also encounter notable historical characters along the route and discover the mystery of her birth.

Steelrising merely adapts the essential components to a steampunk Paris setting while still adhering to Hidetaka Miyazaki’s core structure. You can select one of four classes (Defender, Soldier, Dancer, or Alchemist) at the start of the game, each of which has a unique set of weapons and increased abilities. You can also alter the mechanical doll’s look. Contrary to appearance, the basic build and weapons will let you fix it at a later time.

Aegis gathers enemy souls, just like in the original Dark Souls, which she can then utilise to level up. The same souls and uncommon components are used to improve weapons and oil cans independently. There are just five levels available for weapon levelling, but you can carry many weapons and switch between them as needed.

REVIEW : Steelrising (PS5)

Steelrising has mechanical statues of the Vestal Virgins that double as mobile shops in place of campfires. The items indeed vary based on where the vestal is. Rare components can be found elsewhere, regeneration oil flasks can be purchased somewhere else, and new armour and weapons can frequently be found somewhere else. There are already prepared carriages for moving fast across Paris’s open spaces, and you can transfer to them quickly by giving back tokens. Another option in the game is to instantaneously go back to the previous vestal, but doing so has the drawback of wiping out all of the souls you’ve acquired.

Aegis can use either one of two strategies, depending on the class and weapon selected. For instance, by jumping back and evading counterattacks, do the enemy the most damage possible by using strong and weak hits. In the second scenario, you can deflect the enemy’s assaults by taking advantage of his flaws. A special attack that consumes alchemy capsules recharged from vanquished foes’ bodies or the nearby store is a bonus.

Combat tactics are significantly influenced by weapons. While two rapid blades make the main character twirl in a deadly dance and claws may sharply deflect opposing assaults, a halberd and a handgun deliver painful long-range hits. Given the quick ability to switch gears, Steelrising gives a battle diversity for any shade and preference.

Additionally, special abilities you acquire as you go through the main plot help save Aegis. Thus, a jump on a wire will enable you to reach previously impossible heights, a dash through the air will allow you to fly to far balconies in addition to taking out adversaries, and a kick with your foot will unlock doors and dispatch hostile automatons.

Steelrising is incredibly simple to finish thanks to the wide array of talents available, easy levelling, sets of specialised grenades, and regenerating agents. I easily defeated the remaining foes after the initial boss by keeping them at a distance and using a halberd and a pistol for long-range strikes. At the same time, pumping the main oilers is unnecessary because you can add 50 units to your supply of regenerating oilers after each boss. Additionally, there are certain cheat codes available in the game that enable you to lower the amount of damage dealt by enemy strikes, disable the cooldown period, and lower the cost of stamina. These codes are located separately in the menu options. However, the creators already gave these to the helpless tractors as gifts.

The game Steelrising features a lot of multi-level side objectives in addition to its strong core plot. They are excellently written, extremely inspiring, and typically just as captivating as the main narrative. True, you will need to go back and forth to finish them, but this is nothing new for Souls games.

Separately, it is important to consider how the universe and minute details might influence how readers understand the plot and major characters. Although the design decisions and attacks of the bosses I mentioned above for their simplicity have some merit, striving to appeal to the general player base made a poor joke of those ideas.

Steelrising doesn’t display anything particularly impressive graphically. Although some visual defects in the designers’ work are concealed, Spiders is an old piece of art that nevertheless clearly shows the effects of a limited budget. However, we don’t play these games for the graphics.

review-steelrising-ps5Steelrising is a unique creation that fits well into the confines of a straightforward Souls game with straightforward graphics and has an intriguing scenario, world-building, and engaging tale. But this place's history and peace exceed any negatives, so I am kind in my admiration.
