REVIEW: Warhammer: Vermintide 2 (PC/ Steam)
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a brilliant game and even better sequel. The sequel is challenging as well as thrilling with a hard-hitting AI but can also be frustrating when multiplayer fails.
Vermintide 2 can be really difficult at times but some battles provide a sense of victory and satisfaction very few games can provide. Vermintide 2 is great at creating epic scenes of tensions.
Vermintide 2 is a 4-player co-op first person game in which your team fights hordes of Skaven who have allied with Chaos Raiders. The game is filled with gorgeous scenery filled with ruined cities and treacherous bogs.
Each mission is around 30 minutes long which you will end up repeating but that’s not boring at all since no mission plays out the same. There is uncertainty of which enemies will spawn and where, keeps things exciting.
Vermintide 2 also works as an RPG. There are five characters to choose from with each having its own special ability, bonuses and skill tress. Once your character reaches a certain level you unlock new careers which completely change the playstyle. You can easily transform Bardin the Dwarf’s Ironbreaker into a tank by progressing through the career.
Despite only using left and right mouse button for attack and defense there is depth in combat. There are 50 or so weapons and each has its own timing and keeps things interesting. Melee Weapons and Long-Range weapons have similar variety so that you can choose any style to play as you feel like.
Dodges, parries and charged attacks are difficult to master. Vermintide 2 features an entertaining narrative tutorial but it is really bad at explaining things. Each level has hidden items which take up valuable inventory slots and lead to lowering the party’s overall health which adds to the difficulty.
Vermintide 2 is at its best when played with friends. Saving one of the party member from Skaven packmaster which surprise attacks one of us is very enjoyable. There are several suck moments which makes every session feel like a brutal gauntlet.
The inventory screen in Vermintide 2 is poorly designed and does not display any useful information. You have to switch from character to character to update their gear and free up equipped items. Plus, the game lacks menu to even show stats like health and stamina or even basic stats of a weapon.
The multiplayer connection is janky at best and can be frustrating at times. There is no option to kick troublesome party members and loot is only awarded when you successfully complete a mission. So, when you fail a mission, it feels like time is wasted.
