In Vitro: The world’s first raytracing benchmark for mobile devices

Basemark launched today their new GPU benchmark, GPUScore: In Vitro, the world’s first benchmark for mobile devices featuring raytracing technology. This unique benchmark is targeted for mobile technology developers, such as semiconductor manufacturers, GPU vendors, and application developers, to support them in the development of new cutting-edge mobile technologies.

Raytracing is a state-of-the-art rendering technique that creates photorealistic reflections, shadows, and lighting in a 3D environment. While real-time raytracing has already become a prevalent feature in standalone graphics processing units (GPUs), the adoption of the technology in mobile devices has been limited. However, with the rapid evolution of mobile technology, it is anticipated that the incorporation of real-time raytracing in mobile devices will soon become more widespread.

It might sound controversial to launch a benchmarking tool for a device with a technology that isn’t yet in extensive use, but the reasoning behind it is simple. As raytracing technology expands towards the mobile device domain, there is an obvious need for a benchmarking solution that supports different stakeholders in the development of raytracing-compatible mobile technologies. Therefore, GPUScore: In Vitro fulfils an important role in the market as the only raytracing benchmark for mobile devices – developed to function as a quality and validation tool for new-generation mobile devices.

“Anticipating the evolution of the market, GPUScore: In Vitro sets the stage for the future endeavors of the mobile and SoC manufacturers. In Vitro can run on any raytracing supporting Android device. Among others, it features real-time reflections in an exquisite scene which offers a glimpse into the future of mobile gaming. Like other GPU benchmarks developed by Basemark, In Vitro also includes different testing modes, like the Custom or Experience modes. Exploring an entirely uncharted territory, In Vitro represents a milestone in the growth and development of the Basemark benchmarks”, says Mircea Cristea, Product Owner at Basemark.

Basemark released a series of benchmarks last year covering the entire range of devices and platforms, all the way from mobile devices to premium gaming desktops. GPUScore: In Vitro is the first benchmark to focus on the use of a specific GPU technology on mobile. In Vitro has been developed together with industry leaders and members of Basemark’s benchmark development program to ensure benchmark quality, correct performance measurements and usage of the latest technologies in the graphics industry.
