STANDARD EDITION

The Standard Edition of How a Game Lives is ideal for the casual fan, video game culture connoisseurs, and anyone generally appreciative of the artistry behind video games. Presented as a hardcover book, adorned with an original art piece by renowned illustrator Kilian Eng, this 256+ page book explores the acclaimed work of Jacob Geller.
Over the past five years, Jacob Geller has written and produced a sprawling library of video essays. Deftly interweaving analysis of video games with complex narratives of art, politics, and history, Geller’s writing positions games as vital tools for understanding each other and ourselves.
Marking the first time the text of his videos has been publicly available, this anthology of essays comes with all-new annotations with additional context on Geller’s writing process, behind-the-scenes information, and reflections on how his thoughts have evolved since the video’s original release. Each of the ten selected essays are accompanied by beautiful art from a range of mediums, with afterwords provided by writers such as novelist Jamil Jan Kochai, esteemed YouTube essayist Noah Caldwell-Gervais, game designer Gareth Damian Martin, and author Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah.

With similar art-focused outlooks on the realm of video games, it’s no surprise that a Lost In Cult x Jacob Geller collaboration stands as one of our most-requested works. We’re beyond proud to make this dream pairing a reality.
