PREVIEW : Blood West (PC)

Blood West is an immersive stealth FPS horror set in a wicked Wild West. Brought back to life by strange native spirits, you will explore and scavenge, build up your arsenal and gain powerful perks, hunt your enemies quietly or meet them guns blazing. Take back the frontier, gunslinger! After you die your soul moves on to where it suppose to. Heaven or hell. But if the body is denied its rest six feet under, the soul is doomed to stick around a little longer. The world’s gone mad, broken, and cursed, and the last thing worthy of faith and reverence is the double-barreled shotgun at your side. They say that dead men tell no tales? Well, I do have one hell of a story to tell you.

The spirits of the land drive you on quest after adventure to increasingly bigger trials. And no matter which road you choose, things will get tough. Because hell is now empty and all the devils have arrived! Blood West features challenging FPS combat, cautious stealth techniques, exploration, and resource management. You can expect non-linear engaging gameplay and trait-based character advancement. Blood West is a gritty horror/western game with a gloomy tone. Scenes of gore and violent violence are to be expected, all of which are rendered in stunning low-res, low-poly 3D. I like the game’s demo, and I am enjoying the game now! Following the festival, it quickly became one of my most anticipated games, and it appears to (largely) live up to the hype.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R left a hole in your heart, and Blood West fills it. A treasure-hunting, exploration-based immersive sim/RPG with scary undertones that hasn’t been explored since. Blood West does a good job of advancing the game’s style by bringing new ideas and techniques that are heavily influenced by newer games and genres (Souls-like, roguelike, modern survival horror).

It’s still a little sparse and seems like early access. The abrupt entry into the world, the small play area, and some of the game’s more “video-gamey” components, such as foes wandering aimlessly around the globe with no rhyme or reason, as well as few NPCs, all contribute to the sensation that the game is far from complete.

Blood West’s Early Access, on the other hand, will satisfy and thrill you if you’re like me and can’t wait for this to be finished and everything we all hope it will be. It’s an excellent boomer-shooter with well-considered mechanics. This is a prelude to the Blood series. In a way. You play as an undead cowboy with access to a variety of wild west firearms and occult objects. The game is a first-person shooter with RPG components. Killing mosters and completing tasks earn you xp. When you level up, you improve your character’s fundamental stats. Things like better bandage healing, finding more ammo in caches and corpses, and minimising weapon sway. Damage is constant, although weapons exist in a variety of quality levels. Rusty, ordinary, and one-of-a-kind. Different ammunition types are also available for different adversaries. You can also use bow/melee weapons to play guns blazing and sneaky.

For the most part, every component of the game is perfectly balanced. You can’t save scum, and every time you die, your character gets a permanent malus. They start out little, but gradually become more intrusive. You can eventually completely cripple your character. Finding rare cursed gold coins is the only way to get rid of them. They’re also extremely rare. As a result, expect to die a lot during your initial game.

The game’s action is sluggish and steady. Weapons reload slowly and have a clunky feel to them, adding to the intensity of each battle. Vendors have a limited supply of ammo and charge a high price for it. As a result, melee must be used as a backup.

The foes are diverse, however I’m feeling a little booschitt at this time. They’re tough as muck and need 3-4 pistol meat shots to take out. Headshots are crucial, however enemy animations shake and squirm all the time, making perfect headshots without the “deadly aim” bonus incredibly tough. Furthermore, foes tend to approach you in a strange diagonal and serpentine pattern. The basic zombie has an odd jump-lunge attack that is homing on the player and impossible to dodge, meaning you can’t outrun or sidestep it once they’re in range. They aren’t utterly stupid, but the longer you play, the more tedious it becomes because foes respawn but ammo does not. As a result, you must hurry to complete your task. This makes exploration also kidna tedious since you can clear a place get the loot only to come back to 5 later and it will be completely overrun again.

I can see the possibility of your character being absolutely broken near end game but so far in this demo you are absolutely outgunned, and exploration feels like a chore.
