PREVIEW : RUNGORE: Beginner Experience (PC)

Have you ever fantasised about living in a world without having to adhere to the arbitrary rules of your preferred card game? Taking turns, for example, or using a limited supply of AP, mana, or energy. If you indicated “yes,” I have a gift for you.

RUNGORE: Beginner Experience draws a lot of inspiration from Loop Hero and Slay The Spire. It combines till they stick all the positive elements from those games.

Gameplay: This primarily consists of an auto battler. While the cards appear to be a deck builder, they have more in common with a random item generator that chooses from a list of 10–20 potential items. There is a rather little selection of unique objects, however, you can store many copies of the same item if you have the space. The analogies they made to other games, however, are at best shaky and don’t capture the essence of the games they do so with. However, the game’s drag-and-drop functionality is seamless, and playing it presents no significant difficulties.

The mechanics and feel are quite simple. Since it is an auto battler, you will spend the majority of your time staring at the screen and occasionally clicking inexplicably to make choices. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes dull. Additionally, the bosses feel broken because they may be so challenging at times. You are seldom given enough resources by the game to deal with the bosses. Particularly, one boss is a speed cheat, while another will essentially one-shot you. In comparison to the few other enemy encounters you have, I believe the bosses are unfairly imbalanced. The only truly random aspect of it is the item drawings, and even here, there is a limited supply of truly unique goods.

Simple repetitive beat that loops every 5 to 10 seconds, yet it’s not horrible music or sound effects. At least the audio quality is good.

Overall – You can play it for free, but you should be aware that this is only a preview and not the entire game. As a result, the options are constrained. Even though it was only a preview teaser, I didn’t find it compelling enough to anticipate playing it when it was fully released, which will be in however many months.

When it is published, I believe the price should be comparable to other auto battlers I have played; free-to-play is probably not going to happen, so anything from USD 0.49 to USD 3.99 sounds reasonable given the preview experience.

All I can say is to try it out for yourself; aside from the fact that it is free to play, I have no strong opinions about it (4 out of 10 at best). The final version should feel better, have better balance, and offer more choices.
