REVIEW : Pathfinder Wrath of The Righteous (PS5)

Bring me to D&D City, where the heroes are enhanced and the dice throws are gratifying. A video game adaptation of Pathfinder was inevitable because it became one of the most well-known tabletop RPGs in the world. Similar to how the famous rock tune Paradise City makes many people feel nostalgic, Kingmaker does the same for people trying to roll the perfect 20. The original game was sufficiently well-received to warrant a sequel, Wrath of the Righteous, even if it was far from perfect. Can it make a name for itself in the hall of fame?

REVIEW : Pathfinder Wrath of The Righteous (PS5)

Thanks to its principles and gameplay that rekindled the flame that engulfed our hearts while playing the masterpieces of the genre, the first Pathfinder game launched in 2018 left a lasting impression on RPG enthusiasts. Beyond the innumerable issues, Kingmaker had just as many flaws as it did strengths. People primarily criticised the storytelling, or more accurately, the lack of it. The creators pledged to address all the issues in a sequel after carefully considering the community’s opinions.

The clearest example of how paying attention to your players may pay off is Wrath of the Righteous. The new game draws on Kingmaker’s framework but accomplishes several tasks differently and better.

REVIEW : Pathfinder Wrath of The Righteous (PS5)

It doesn’t only feel like an admirable foraging trip around the universe of RPG rules and game mechanics; it feels like a completely built game right away. Thanks to the enhanced balance discovered by the Owlcat Games engineers, the evolution is undeniable.

Your hero is dragged inside Kenabres, the haven, more dead than alive, and that is where it all begins. The plot seems to point you toward a more forgiving beginning after you receive medical attention from a dragon and participate in some joyous celebrations, subject to additional inspection. However, as there is no rest for the wicked and courage does not grow on trees, everything is thrown into disarray when a demon lord suddenly attacks, giving our hero the chance to embrace their lineage. You will need to decide on your primary character’s present and future, just as you did when developing their history.

The epic story Wrath of the Righteous is filled with characters, narrative twists, and no straight lines. You, the player, get to choose whether you wish to be nice or evil. The primary objective is to prevent destruction and preserve the globe, but you can choose to either free or enslave it. In contrast to Kingmaker, this second instalment’s plot plays a significant role in the gameplay, with the developers attempting to blend fun with serious subjects. Even though there were some glitches, it was a vast improvement over the first campaign and highly enjoyable.

The game system itself underwent revisions and grew in size to accommodate the preferences of a bigger range of RPG enthusiasts. This is immediately apparent as soon as you start creating your character: there are currently 25 major character classes available, with each class divided into different archetypes. To select the avatar that most accurately captures your personality and playing style, you can mix and match almost at will. You will be able to unlock at least 13 prestige classes, each with a variety of specialities, to satisfy even the most discerning player.

You will also have the option to follow a chosen Mythic Path in order to transform into a legendary creature on top of all of this.

Playing your cards right can result in becoming anything from a golden dragon to a lich in addition to the usual suspects like an angel or demon. Of course, there are a number of requirements that even those who are familiar with the Pathfinder ruleset will find difficult to complete before you can acquire these legendary statuses.

For those who have the patience to read through all the material contained in the game, the user experience of the game is thankfully much improved as well.

The interface is also far more comprehensive and provides the gamer with all the information they require. The good news is that character development can take up to two hours, which will please genre enthusiasts. However, it also implies that beginners will struggle to understand how to roll a useful build.

The creators made sure that even individuals without much gaming experience would have an opportunity to experience what it would be like to be heroes or archenemies, determining the fate of the game world, by including a variety of difficulty levels, up to bespoke rules. Since you will have to lead the fifth crusade against the demons in addition to going on your own adventures, these elements are very welcome.

You’ll need to control generals, direct armies on a map, construct and improve fortifications, and decide how to approach strategic battles.

The turn-based warfare system, which eliminates the confusion and mayhem of the real-time approach, is by far the most noticeable and well-received new addition. Eventually, you will have enough time to make choices and apply group tactics to gain the upper hand in any combat scenario. Being able to effortlessly flip between the two also frees you up to concentrate on major conflicts rather than bothering yourself with little ones.

REVIEW : Pathfinder Wrath of The Righteous (PS5)

We’ve previously touched on the new UI a little bit, but there’s no denying that Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous is a sizable game with a tonne of material that can be challenging to manage even for seasoned gamers. It is comparable to a large dinner that takes a while to digest. There are also a few dubious design decisions, such as the inventory system, which is at best awkward, the weight restriction, which can be gotten around, and the control scheme selected for the console version, which is overly complex without cause. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous has improved graphics that are pleasing to the eye. More care might have been given to the menus and static visual elements, but the game world, together with the animations and the FX, looks great. The music is still catchy and perfectly matches the mood of the game, just like it did in Kingmaker.

review-pathfinder-wrath-of-the-righteous-ps5The fact that the developers voiced many of the ancillary dialogues in addition to those that were directly relevant to the main plot earns them bonus points.
