REVIEW : Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood (Xbox Series X)

The World of Darkness lands in a big way on the new generation of consoles (and on previous platforms) with a supernatural infiltration game that has a nod to the classic The Suffering and that, although it is not in the front line of major releases, can be interesting.

REVIEW : Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood (Xbox Series X)

Werewolf The Apocalypse – Earthblood is an infiltration game that to whoever writes this has brought back some striking reminiscences, to say the least. Yes, it is based on a pencil and paper role-playing game and is part of the ‘World of Darkness’, which is a plus for a certain part of the audience, but in any case, the name does not deceive: there are werewolves. There is blood. And the setting has a somewhat post-apocalyptic look, but the reality is that everything looks extremely modern for the most part. And now a server’s question is: does anyone remember The Suffering? Because you will still like it when we tell you that there is a link to a certain extent that we have loved. Welcome to the life of the infiltrating werewolf. Welcome to Werewolf.

REVIEW : Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood (Xbox Series X)

Let’s go in parts: what is this Werewolf The Apocalypse? His argument is simple and could be summarized in the typical one: there is an evil corporation whose plans endanger the earth, and we are its protectors. The nuances are that the bad guys are at the service of a destructive cosmic force and that we are part of a squad of werewolves. And with that, I would almost be. In playable terms, Werewolf The Apocalypse presents us with a situation in which we are part of a military team that carries out interventions, but we are the good guys (this with an asterisk), so we use powers and technology to infiltrate the purest style of any product of this genre. Although if we are in a hurry to move, we can even remove the animal that we carry inside, never better.

And this is not funny: we can become either a wolf or a werewolf. Yes, the first thing has made a certain twilight princess ring in your head (whoever does not catch the reference to Zelda, can leave the room), and the second … because it gives the game a hoot that will be worth it. try. Because we all love to infiltrate, we love that we are not caught, we like to live on the edge.

It is true that a wolf makes less noise, is more agile and protects itself from the general view, but mobility is not as precise as we would like. But complaints aside, it supposes a special freshness to be able to turn into a wolf completely and even to be able to attack the enemies in that way, although unless we can guarantee the absolute success of the operation, the most advisable thing is to materialize the human form and then execute the attack, which will be stealthy as if it were a supernatural Sam Fisher.

Our character, in human form, uses his senses of detection to know where to attack, what to do and follow the necessary circuits to open doors, for example, in addition to being able to attack in a “human” and natural way. All for a stealthy exploration not exempt from the fact that when the time comes, we open fire. And if bullets aren’t enough, we can always metamorphose and become a werewolf, at which time everything will go haywire and we will become a brutal creature that performs aggressive attacks and is capable of breaking even part of the elements of the stage. It is the moment in which the gameplay that has an RPG point, doing something of an honour to the origins of the license, of action becomes more an aggressive and pleasant game because seeing the enemies fly through the air is something that you know, everyone likes it.

REVIEW : Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood (Xbox Series X)

They are beings with a background, but not so intense that it sticks in our memory. We do not believe that even the main character will be able to be valued as something recurrent.

Let’s talk about the technical section because here there is a lot of fabric to cut. In Werewolf, we are facing a game that graphically performs well. But we will not go from there. Yes, there are detailed elements, but not much. Some characters attract more attention than others, although the faces, despite the attempt to make them moderately expressive, seem to get lost in the mists of time, bringing to mind the consoles of two generations ago. The environments, which have a modern, industrial and “military base” tinge look complete, but at the same time quite simple. The very design of our wolf is fine, but credibility is water-based wherever we look at it. It gives the feeling that the graphic section is there to help and in a way to adorn, and the truth is that it is fluid. Let us not be confused by the backward compatibility: it is not of the new generation, although tested in an S Series, the fluidity is bestial and it moves like a fish in the water.

review-werewolf-the-apocalypse-earthblood-xbox-series-xIn the control, everything is simple and intuitive. The handling is typical of a third-person action game with infiltration, without fanfare, although the learning curve is forced with a first mission in which we learn to move and use the powers and abilities distributed by the buttons. In this sense, as in the graph, the game simply complies, so it is approved, but without us being able to boast of something that it is not. We can say that the game is made to reach all audiences without a difference, although when it comes to "engaging" it seems focused on very determined users.
