What’s New: The May 2020 Windows 10 Update Is Here

Microsoft has just released its new update for Windows 10. The brand typically releases two major updates for the platform per year, and in the May 2020 one, changes will help performance and user-friendliness.

Unfortunately, some users are running into issues when trying to download the update. Certain devices are blocking it, but there are ways to get around the problem. Here’s what you should know.

The New Update

With the new update come new changes to the user interface and platform. Perhaps the most significant upgrade is with Cortana. The Windows 10 productivity assistant is getting some new speech patterns and capabilities. You’ll find that, with the update, Cortana adds a more natural approach to speaking. It can now also manage new tasks efficiently. Further, Microsoft is giving Cortana its own app. That way, when it needs new updates, you won’t have to wait as long.

The Windows Search feature is also getting more efficient. With a new algorithm in this update, it can search throughout files, folders and the entire device faster than ever. A smaller, yet crucial improvement is with video playback performance. If you want to perfect your Windows 10 gaming experience, this change is a must. It enhances video playback performance and refresh rate. When you play on multiple monitors, things will run more smoothly.

Virtual desktop names will come in handy now. Windows 10 used to label multiple desktops in a numbered fashion, but now you can name them yourself for peak organization. Resetting or reinstalling from a version of an update will be easier, too. Microsoft is allowing for better reset properties should you need them. Additionally, Kaomoji sees some new shortcuts and characters. You can now access features like this one — ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ — from a few clicks.

Of the primary updates, these are the leading examples of what will be most useful to users. However, some people are having trouble with installation.

Blocking Updates

As the update went up for download, users started reporting trouble with the process. Some devices have been unable to install the update fully, and others don’t see it at all.

In its list of known issues, Microsoft acknowledged the problem that was preventing many devices from accessing the update. Certain products like the Surface Pro 7 or Surface Laptop 3 have been examples of those that the block affects.

You can force the update to download through Microsoft’s Update Assistant. However, be wary of any flagged problems. It’s a sign that you should wait for a patch.

How to Download

Though the update is new, Microsoft typically makes it available to its userbase gradually. You can check to see if you have the update by going to Settings — Update & Security — Windows Update — Check for Updates. To clear up confusion with the block, you might see the following message:

“The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. We’re offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn’t quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you’ll see the update available on this page. There’s nothing you need to do at this time.”

As Microsoft expands its scope, more people will get the update. If you don’t have it yet, no need to worry!

Enjoy the Updates

Each time Microsoft releases an update, its devices improve. Windows 10 is one of the most popular platforms out there, with hundreds of millions of users. As you get the new May 2020 Windows 10 update, you can enjoy all the new features. Be sure to keep an eye out for updates in the future, too.
