When it comes to anime, and anime-inspired video games, a poppin’ intro song is one of the most important indicators of quality. Luckily for Neural Cloud — the latest chapter in the Girls’ Frontline universe from developer Sunborn Network Technology — acclaimed synth-pop musician Owl City took the reins and crafted what is colloquially known as “quite the banger” with Up to the Cloud. The track has reached an incredibly impressive 500K+ streams in just over a week across YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, and everywhere else music is streaming — and the count keeps climbing!

So whether you’re a fan of anime and mobile gaming or just after some groovy synth tunes to dance to, throw this delightful melody on your streaming platform of choice and get to vibin’!

Neural Cloud is a strategy RPG featuring an intuitively designed deck-builder, delivering hyper-charged combat sequences on a tiled battlefield. Fast-paced, clever gameplay is punctuated by futuristic-styled aesthetics and a soundtrack full of melody and attitude. In the game, players assume the role of the Professor, who, after three years of dormancy, has awoken in 2060 in the virtual cloud network surrounded by other AI consciousnesses who were uploaded and scattered following a tragic technological “accident.” The Professor must save these beings—known as Exiles—by banding together to escape the virtual purgatory and uncover the truth behind their demise and Project Neural Cloud, or else face an eternity lost in cyberspace.

To celebrate the launch of the game, developer Sunborn Network Technology got in touch with acclaimed indie electronic outfit Owl City, known for the 2009 smash hit Fireflies. The developers felt that Adam Young’s particular brand of upbeat yet wistful, mellifluous, and straight-up groovy synth-pop artistry was perfect for a game that explores the mysteries behind human consciousness and the concept of a digital post-life.

Up to the Cloud is a thematic — and melodic — meditation that dives into the game’s philosophical ponderings on artificial intelligence and what it means to be “human” in a world beyond the meat and bones of the natural body. Adam Young inserts himself as a character within the Neural Cloud universe, exploring the idea of uploading his consciousness into the digital world and examining the complex relationship between humans and AI in a musical form that meshes perfectly with the world of Neural Cloud.
