REVIEW : Bound By Blades (PC)

Bound By Blades, a touching RPG by independent developer Zeth is the company’s first product. Bound by Blades, which was released on November 15th, 2022, was largely ignored by the gaming community. It only took me an hour to recognise what a heinous injustice this was. At first, glance, Bound by Blades appears to be a kid-friendly game set in a world full of various anthropomorphic animals. However, after I got into the game, I discovered that it was a blast, packed with features and a story that I hadn’t anticipated for such a product.

According to the legend, warring clans were wreaking havoc on Ashmyr’s countryside.

Then something occurred, a strange power descended upon the region, and certain of its inhabitants were endowed with skills and strength much beyond that of their fellow citizens. Sadly, neither those who possessed this new power nor those who were exposed to it in battle fared well. They soon started to transform into the terrible beings known as “the Ilcyon.” After the monsters’ wrath, the formerly at war people banded together to combat the new danger. You and your pals (The Bound) can help with this. Since you were young, you have been prepared to battle these creatures, and through time, you have developed an immunity to their social transformations.

It took around two hours to complete the plot, but I believe that is appropriate given the game’s suggested retail price. Even though the story was brief, occasionally things happened that I was unaware of or that could have happened out of order. When I returned to town, the NPCs would make a statement on something that had just happened with The Bound but that I had not previously mentioned.

Three characters are available for you to choose from when the game first launches. Teo (a two-handed sword-wielding cat), Guren (a bunny with a bow), and Kota make up this trio of mates (an ox with a glaive and shield).

Kota and Guren (a bunny wearing a bow) (an ox with a glaive and shield). When you select a character, you will be shown a brief profile of that person and given the option to select one of three available skins. Even though the three companions travel together throughout the entire narrative, only the character you are controlling will be involved in the battle. When you’re in a secure location, you can switch to one of the other heroes if you decide you made the incorrect decision.

There are many interesting characters in Bound by Blades, including Finny, a goldfish-like creature with whom you frequently engage.

Finny is a lonely friend who longs to help more people and not just those who live near streams, ponds, and rivers. Eldros, your tutor, is a heroic figure who assisted in bringing the clans together when the ilcyon threat first materialised. Eldros, an experienced warrior now, has been training the three pals since they were kids.

Bound by Blades only features boss-like foes in its combat. Players decide the boss they want to face when they leave a secure hub (you can redo the fights even after winning to farm more loot and XP). The player’s chosen character engages in combat on a four-plot square with the boss in the middle.

The player must roll and dash from each standable plot to dodge the abilities that are fired at them while also depleting the enemy’s health metre. The core elements of the game’s combat system include the ability to change targets and evade, along with quick (basic) assaults and slower, stronger attacks. Also, keep in mind that you have health potions. Successful battles grant experience and allow a character’s stats to level up. On the medium difficulty setting, I had no trouble until I made it to the fourth-story boss named Talys — a vicious snake-like creature.

Once I started playing, there was no way to change the difficulty; therefore, if you want a challenge to start with, use the highest setting. I should point out that once the story is through, you’ll be able to take on every boss again at a tougher level.

Bound by Blades has features like enchanting and transmogrification (making gear appear like other armour pieces), multiplayer co-op, and a cute little pet system that I wasn’t anticipating. The animals referred to as “boundlings” and “myrthos” were my favourites.

They can fight alongside you in battle, and you have the choice to give them names. Feeding and caring for them will help your boundling grow stronger or perhaps evolve.

review-bound-by-blades-pcBound by Blades, in my opinion, is a great place for a new generation of gamers to begin their journey. Kids will be compelled to read character interactions and item descriptions in the absence of vocal narration. To advance in the battle system, one must have quick reflexes and flexible thinking.
