REVIEW : DRAGON BALL FighterZ (PS4/ PS4 Pro)
Fan of Dragon Ball but unable to find a good 3v3 anime style Dragon Ball Game? Well wait no further Dragon Ball FighterZ is the answer for you. Dragon Ball FighterZ is the love letter to Dragon Ball anime and will satisfy anime and Gaming Fans alike.
Arc System Works perfectly recreates Akira Toriyama’s creation in Dragon Ball FighterZ. The Devs have utilized the latest version of engine used in Guilty Gears to create this amazing presentation. At first glance it will look live everything is rendered in 2D but actually they are 3D models, this allows for smooth transition between 2D fights and 3D animations.
Arc System Works have created a reputation for creating technically advanced Fighting games which reward long time players and are quite hard for new players. Well, they have ironed out this issue with Dragon Ball FighterZ.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is very accessible for new payers with very few buttons used to hit combos and the addition of autocombos. E-Sports fans will complain about this but this is a really smart move as the game now is accessible to very large audience. Light, Medium, Heavy and Special form the basic attack buttons, bash anyone of them repeatedly and you will activate an auto-combo. All other Super Moves and Combos are Quarter Circle Commands. This is a very refined though simplistic system.
Simplistic does not mean the Game lacks depth, assists and other mechanics offer sufficient amount of depth for Dragon Ball FighterZ. Pressing the button for assist, summons your team mate who will perform a single attack, knowing which character does which attack and when is really important. Knowing the exact moment to do a teleport attack or call in your team mate mid combo is very crucial.
Parries, overheads and guard also expand your arsenal of commands to take down your opponent. All the commands are universal and every character has access to them, it’s just that every character reacts in different manner. If it sounds overwhelming, then don’t fear as Dragon Ball FighterZ features one of the best tutorials in a fighting game.
The story mode is nothing short of amazing and features you taking control of Goku and fighting through Sagas along with other characters. Arcade mode is different than your usual run of the mill climb up the ladder, you have to unlock certain skills to access upper stages of Arcade mode and unlock secret characters.
We tested out the online multiplayer and it works flawlessly until someone decides to quit between the match and that is frustrating.
24 Characters in the roster is decent but it still lacks variety as you still have 3 Gokus and 2 Vegetas in that. Further, same controls for all the character can lead to saturation real fast.
Otherwise, Dragon Ball FighterZ is filled to the brim with content with many modes and multiple endings to story modes. Pretty good alternative to Marvel vs Capcom Infinite if you are just Looking for a good 3v3 fighter.
